Kuala Lumpur 5 Steps Difference
The initial idea of the Kuala Lumpur 5 Steps Difference photography project came across my mind on my recent trip to Malaysia, it appeared to me right at the moment when I got in my friend’s car on the airport route to his house.
This was my first trip to Southeast Asia and for me, almost everything was entirely different; from the right-handed cars to the highways, vegetation, and massive modern infrastructures among much other unfamiliarity. All these cases naturally accelerated the desire in me to see and encounter the vast cultural and geographical space, but what caused the formation of the idea for this project was the dark bar mounted on the front of the car and covered half of the front windshield. When I asked my friend why you limited your sight, he explained that this is a common practice here. I immediately thought about the beautiful urban view, and now this limited view! This limitation of sight comes from a kind of unique cultural thinking and worldview that will definitely be seen in the local culture of Malaysian people and in their everyday life. For me, as a photographer with a different culture, from another country, the manifestations of this cultural subjectivity could be the basis for the creation of work of art that may be viewed from a Malaysian native, due to the presence of cultural and behavioral elements, they do not face it with critical view. With this idea in mind, I began to take photos from the perspective of a tourist along with two of my Malaysian friends, who were both inside the car, and I realize they see the city with 5 steps of light.
